Spice Level: Varies throughout the series, with more prominent romance and spice in the later books.
This multiple-book review comes as absolutely NO surprise because this is hands down one of my favorite book series EVER!

If you know me, you know I love a good fantasy romance, and the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas has everything you could possibly want. Fae, hot men, romance, magic, betrayal, heartbreak, love, and WAR. What more could you ask for?!
This series is jam-packed with SO much goodness, and just when you think you know exactly where the story is going, Sarah J. Maas throws in a twist that completely changes everything. You think you know who you want the main character to end up with, then BAM! Suddenly, you've changed your mind and can't imagine it any other way.
And that is one of my favorite things about these books. The characters, relationships, and storylines are so complex. There is so much depth to the world Sarah J. Maas has created, and I genuinely think she does an AMAZING job with world-building.
I know world-building can sometimes feel like a lot when you're starting a fantasy series, but she makes it so easy to picture everything. The courts, the creatures, the magic, the settings... I feel like I can actually see everything happening in my head as I'm reading. You become so invested in this world that you almost forget you're reading a book!
And the characters? SO much depth. Feyre Archeron and her sisters Nesta and Elain, each have their own strengths, struggles, personalities, and character development. You get to watch them grow, make mistakes, fall in love, and discover just how strong they really are. Each book brings something different to the table, and I love how the story continues to evolve.
Let's Talk About Each Book...
Note: These descriptions are spoiler-free because I refuse to ruin any of the surprises for anyone who hasn't read this series yet, but pleaseeeee GET ON IT!
1. A Court of Thorns and Roses
This is where it all begins!
We meet Feyre, a human girl who finds herself pulled into the dangerous and magical world of the Fae after an encounter in the woods changes everything.
This first book introduces us to Prythian, its different courts, the Fae, and the complicated relationships between humans and immortals. There is romance, mystery, danger, and so much more happening beneath the surface.
I love how this book sets the foundation for everything that comes later. You're introduced to a world that seems beautiful and enchanting on the outside but has so many secrets hiding underneath. And trust me, things are not always what they seem!
2. A Court of Mist and Fury
Okay... THIS BOOK.
If I had to pick one that really had me completely hooked, this would be a serious contender. The story takes such an interesting turn, and we get to see Feyre's character develop in ways I didn't expect.
There is so much more exploration of the world, new characters, deeper relationships, and an entirely different perspective on some of the things we thought we understood from the first book.
The romance in this one? I mean... COME ON. To die for.
This book is full of emotional moments, unexpected connections, and some of my favorite character development in the entire series. I think this is where so many readers become completely obsessed with the ACOTAR universe.
3. A Court of Wings and Ruin
Get ready because things are getting SERIOUS.
This book takes everything we've learned about Prythian and brings so many of the storylines together. The stakes are higher, the relationships are tested, and the threat of war becomes a major focus.
We see so much strength, loyalty, sacrifice, and growth from the characters we've come to love. There are alliances, difficult decisions, and plenty of moments that had me on the edge of my seat.
I especially loved seeing how much Feyre had grown since the beginning of the series. She's not the same person we met in the first book, and watching that transformation has been one of my favorite parts of the journey.
4. A Court of Frost and Starlight
A little breather after everything we've just been through!
This one is a shorter novella, and I actually loved getting a chance to slow down and spend more time with the characters outside of all the major conflicts. Although this is definitely my least favorite of Feyres story.
We get a glimpse into what life looks like after the events of the previous book, along with some holiday-season festivities, personal moments, and a little more insight into everyone's relationships.
I wouldn't describe this one as action-packed like the others, but I think it's a really nice addition to the series. It gives you a chance to reconnect with the characters and enjoy some quieter moments in Prythian.
5. A Court of Silver Flames
And now we get to dive into Nesta's story!
This book shifts the focus to Feyre's sister, Nesta, and honestly, I think her character is one of the most interesting in the entire series.
Nesta is complicated, guarded, stubborn, and definitely not always the easiest character to love. But that's what makes her story so interesting. We get to explore her struggles, her relationships, and the emotional walls she's built around herself.
There is also a whole new romance to obsess over, along with plenty of tension, personal growth, and some seriously strong characters.
I loved getting to see a different side of this world through Nesta's perspective. Her journey is very different from Feyre's, and I think that's what makes this book such an important addition to the series.
My Overall Thoughts
One of the biggest reasons I love this series is that every book gives you something different. Just when you think you've figured out the direction of the story, Sarah J. Maas introduces something new that makes you rethink EVERYTHING.
The romance is amazing, the character development is incredible, and the world-building is some of my favorite I've read in fantasy. And let's not forget the fact that these books have some seriously swoon-worthy characters. IYKYK.
I also love that the series isn't just about romance. There are themes of sisterhood, friendship, healing, sacrifice, loyalty, finding yourself, and learning what it means to be strong. There's so much more beneath the fantasy and romance, which is what makes these books so memorable.
Should You Read ACOTAR?
UM, YES. ABSOLUTELY.
If you're someone who loves fantasy, romance, magical worlds, complicated characters, unexpected twists, and a little bit of spice, this series needs to be on your TBR.
I will say that you need to give the series a chance and let the world develop. There is so much happening, and the first book is just the beginning of a much bigger story.
My overall verdict: One of my all-time favorite fantasy series. A MUST-READ!
I'm already looking forward to Sarah J. Maas's next releases because I am nowhere near ready to leave this world behind.
Sara J. Maas has made it clear the next releases need to be followed by her other series, Throne of Glass and Crescent City, which means I have A LOT of reading to get through before I can continue on with this series and the Archeron sisters. Right now, I'm making my way through her series, Throne of Glass, and I cannot WAIT to share my thoughts once I've finished the series as a whole.
Apparently, Sarah J. Maas has decided to take over my bookshelf, and honestly, I'm not complaining at all.
If you haven't read ACOTAR yet, consider this your sign to start!
